Best portable carpet and upholstery cleaners: BISSELL vs. Hoover vs. Shark
A portable extractor is useful only when its tank size, hose reach, tools, cleaning chemistry, and fabric limits match the mess. This research-based guide compares three exact corded models for upholstery, stairs, vehicle interiors, pet accidents, and carpet spots—without treating manufacturer stain claims as hands-on results.

Products compared
BISSELL Little Green HydroSteam Pet 3618
Key specifications: SteamWash, Steam, and Wash modes; 64-ounce clean-water tank; 51-ounce dirty-water tank; 15-foot cord; 4.8-foot hose; 13-pound listed weight; 5-inch Tough Stain Tool; Multi-Surface Tool; and a three-year limited warranty. BISSELL says the machine can be used on carpet, rugs, upholstery, vehicle interiors, sealed hard floors, tile, and grout when the correct mode and tool are used.
Best for: Households that regularly face oily or sticky spots and want one portable machine for fabric surfaces plus selected sealed hard surfaces.
Tradeoff: It is the heaviest choice here and has a shorter cord and smaller clean tank than the Hoover. Steam adds capability but also adds fabric-compatibility checks, mode selection, descaling, and maintenance; do not use heat on a surface unless its care instructions allow it.
Hoover CleanSlate XL FH15000V
Key specifications: 96-fluid-ounce clean-water tank; separate clean and dirty tanks; 22-foot cord; 5-foot hose; 11-pound listed weight; 7-inch WidePath Tool; Pet Tool; Tight Spot Tool; Hose Rinse Tool; trial-size portable spot-cleaning solution; and a two-year limited warranty for domestic use.
Best for: Families cleaning larger upholstery sections, stairs, rugs, and vehicle interiors who value fewer refills, a wide tool, a long cord, and a built-in way to flush the hose.
Tradeoff: The larger tank and tool set require more storage room, and this model does not provide steam. Hoover's manual limits it to compatible wet-cleanable carpet and upholstery and directs owners to use Hoover cleaning fluids intended for the machine.
Shark StainStriker PX201
Key specifications: Dual-activated CarpetXpert and OXY formula system with no premixing; 12-foot cord; 4.3-foot hose; 450-watt motor; 3.5-inch Reversible Bristle Tool; 7-inch Wide Path Tool; Integrated Crevice Tool; 12-ounce OXY Multiplier starter formula; 6-ounce CarpetXpert starter formula; and a three-year limited warranty.
Best for: Pet owners and frequent spot-cleaners who want narrow and wide tools and are comfortable maintaining a two-formula system.
Tradeoff: It has the shortest cord and hose in this comparison, provides no steam, and commits the owner to two compatible formulas. Shark's current product copy and specification table contain conflicting weight language, so this guide does not use weight to rank the PX201; verify the current package before checkout.
Our practical picks
Choose the BISSELL 3618 when controlled steam is genuinely useful for compatible oily or sticky messes. Choose the Hoover FH15000V when tank capacity, cord reach, and a wide cleaning tool matter more than steam. Choose the Shark PX201 when targeted spot and odor work and its dual-formula system fit the household routine. These are specification-based test-category selections, not popularity, sales-rank, or hands-on-testing claims.
Start with the fabric code
Check the furniture maker's care label before adding water or heat. Hoover's manual allows wet extraction on upholstery marked W or S/W and says not to clean fabric marked S. A missing label, X code, delicate natural fiber, leather, suede, velvet, dye-sensitive fabric, or heat-sensitive adhesive is a reason to stop and consult the furniture maker or a professional cleaner. Steam capability does not override the surface's care instructions.
Pretest every surface
Vacuum loose soil first, then test solution and technique on a small hidden area. Hoover directs users to rub a hidden area with a damp white cloth, wait ten minutes, and check a white paper towel for color transfer. Protect wood, metal, and the floor beneath a rug or piece of furniture from overspray and drips.
Tank size changes the job
Hoover's 96-ounce clean tank is the clearest advantage for a sofa, stair run, or several vehicle seats. BISSELL's 64-ounce clean tank is easier to carry but will require earlier refilling on broad jobs. Tank capacity is not a cleaning-power measurement: extraction technique, tool contact, solution, soil type, and dry passes matter more than ounces alone.
Steam is useful but not universal
BISSELL provides separate SteamWash, Steam, and Wash modes, which makes the 3618 the most versatile model here. Use the manual's mode and surface chart instead of assuming maximum heat is best. BISSELL's roughly 25-minute upholstery-drying statement applies to Steam mode in a manufacturer test on new polyester; it is not a general drying promise for every fabric, humidity level, or amount of solution.
Reach matters on stairs and in vehicles
Measure from the nearest grounded outlet to the farthest seat, step, or sofa section. Hoover combines a 22-foot cord with a 5-foot hose. BISSELL lists a 15-foot cord and 4.8-foot hose, while Shark lists a 12-foot cord and 4.3-foot hose. Keep the machine on a stable floor below stairs rather than balancing it on a step or upholstered surface.
Formula cost is part of ownership
All three systems are designed around manufacturer-approved cleaning solutions. Shark's PX201 mixes two formulas in the tool, so both become recurring consumables. BISSELL and Hoover likewise warn against unapproved chemistry. Never combine cleaners, bleach, solvents, essential oils, or foaming household products inside a machine unless the exact manual explicitly permits them.
Extraction and drying prevent new problems
More liquid is not automatically more cleaning. Use controlled spray passes, then make slow dry suction passes until little water is visible. Ventilate the room, keep people and pets off damp areas, and allow carpet and upholstery to dry completely. Empty and rinse the dirty tank promptly, flush or rinse the hose and tools as directed, and let parts air-dry before storage.
Electrical and stair safety
Use a properly grounded outlet, keep plugs and controls away from wet hands, unplug before cleaning or servicing the machine, and never leave it plugged in unattended. Do not pick up flammable liquids or hot material. On stairs, keep the machine on the floor at the bottom and clean only within safe hose reach.
Check the exact model and package
Match model 3618, FH15000V, or PX201 exactly. Similar-looking bundles can change tools, formula sizes, warranty eligibility, or the seller of record. The current Shark product page lists a 7-inch tool in the box while older Shark listings have shown a Pet Tool; confirm the live package contents and authorized seller, save the receipt, and record the serial number.
Bottom line
The BISSELL is the specialist when compatible steam cleaning is worth the extra weight and care. The Hoover is the workhorse for capacity, reach, and larger fabric jobs. The Shark is the targeted dual-formula choice, provided its shorter reach and two-consumable system suit your routine. Buy for the surfaces you can safely clean—not for the most dramatic stain claim.
